Before you touch anything
- [ ] Confirm a backup from the last 24 hours exists, stored away from the server
- [ ] Restore it to staging at least once a quarter. A backup you never restored is a guess
- [ ] Note the current versions of core, theme and plugins in What changed
Updates
- [ ] Update on staging first when the site sells online or has custom code
- [ ] Update plugins one group at a time so a failure points to its cause
- [ ] Read the changelog on any major version before applying it
- [ ] Remove plugins and themes that are inactive
After the update, test as a visitor
- [ ] Open the home page, one inner page and the contact page on a phone
- [ ] Submit each form for real and confirm the message arrives
- [ ] On a store, run a test order through to the confirmation email
- [ ] Check the browser console for new errors
Measure and record
- [ ] Measure mobile speed and update Mobile speed score on the website
- [ ] Review uptime and note any downtime with its cause
- [ ] Run a security scan and check for unknown admin users
- [ ] Log hours used, then look at Scope flag. Over plan twice in a row means a pricing talk
